Olive Oil (Olea Europaea)Maui Nani uses Olive Oil in our Lehua Honey Cleanser.Olive oil obtained from the fruit of the Olea europaea tree a traditional crop of the Mediterranean Basin. Although the olive tree originated in Asia, it has been cultivated for over 5,000 years in Mediterranean countries. Olive oil has been used in cosmetics for thousands of years. The original "cold cream" was made in ancient Greece from olive oil and bees wax. Olive oil contains a high percentage (55 - 86%) of monounsaturated fatty acid triglycerides, primarily Oleic acid. It also has 1-2% of squalene, phytosterols, tocosterols, Vitamin K and other minor components. Olive oil makes a gentle cleansing and moisturizing soap when saponified, such as used to make Castile soap.
